As you know, I’m not good at drawing, so I decided to make the Christmas card by cutting papers.

Letter 11: Dishes

Dear Tim:
It's pretty late now, the Mexican dishes you shared make me feel hungry, my stomach is growling, but if I eat now, I would need to exercise for an hour to digestion, so I'm not doing this.😂


Mexicans use the word "chili" when speaking about any one of about 100 different types of peppers. But in the US it's a dish. Masa is a much finer grind, like a regular flour. Corn meal is coarser, and may not be suitable for many of these recipes. A tortilla is a flat bread, and tortilla press is a simple machine used to take a round ball of dough and make it into a flat tortilla. They are common in Mexican family just like rice cookers are in Taiwan.

Our family is a non-cooking family, because my parents work every day, they come back late and need to relax. In my impression, my mother only cook twice, and they're all mushrooms chicken soup, so I have a deep feeling of this. Mushroom chicken soup is very cherished for me, I do not know what time I’ll eat it next time, I also didn’t remember the last time I ate, but the smell of it I can remember clearly.

Here's the recipe!

Ingredients:

Chicken legs, mushrooms, gingers, salt

Tools:

An steam cooker

Method:

Step 1: Put the mushrooms in cold water, make them soft, (keep the water), then cut off the head. Chicken legs peeled (if you buy in traditional market, the vendors could help you do it), put in boiled water, to make the blood out. Cut the gingers in slices.

Step 2: Filled the pot with seven full water, the water which make the mushrooms soft can add in, this would make the soup smell better. Put gingers, mushrooms, chicken in it, and add 2 cups of water outside the pot, in the steam cooker, press the switch. Remember to add salt before taking it out from the steam cooker.

Because the mother doesn’t like heavy taste, so she won’t add too much seasoning. She’s not good at cooking, so she developed the most simple, convenient and streamlined recipe. We don’t have cool cooking tools, there’s only one knife, we don’t even have oil. The recipe used basic tools, people who do not cook can also learn it easily, because this recipe does not need any skills or experience.

Even my lazy mother can do it, I believe you can do it, too. Remember to control the amount of salt, or it will be salty! LOL

Letter 10: World Press Photo 2017

Dear Tim:

On Wednesday, Summer took us to “World Press Photo Exhibition “. There’s always something you can’t imagine happening on the world. A few photos made me impressed.

One is a black rhino, poached for its horn, is found dead at South Africa. In Asia, rhino horn is considered valued medicinal properties. Before the teacher explained the picture, she asked us a question: "Do you think wild animals should be protect?" In fact, I would like to say no. If no greedy human being selfishness and killed those animals, then we would not need to protect them.  Why do people protect them after hurting them? Is there any way for humans not to do such a thing? The teacher also said that if it is a professional person took the rhino horn, the rhino can continue to survive, you aren’t a professional person, then why are you still doing this? Even a nine-year-old child knows this is wrong, but people are blinded by their greedy.

There are already many animals, environments and resources in this world that have vanished because of human selfishness. But when can we face this problem?

Q&A

Jason is going to school in Toronto. The weather there might be a shocking experience for him, people in Canada may be the only one who looks forward to cold. Toronto Blue Jays should be his new baseball team. When it comes to ice hockey, I think I should have tell you that there’s an ice hockey national player in our school, which is Vivian Shao’s classmate now!

Unlike Patrick, Mr. Maher just needs to show up to get the free breakfast. 

Echo is working in Ireland and just has the occasional day off. Echo’s job is skating with the company, and this year they will go through about twelve different European countries. When I was in kindergarten, my brother and I learned roller-skating in the park, This winter holiday, my junior high classmates asked us to go ice-skating. I think both of them are similar, if you know one of them, the other will be easy for you. So I have never fell on the ice. 

L9: School Fair

Dear Tim:
Saturday (11/11) is the school fair, compared with last year, we sell one more product, the corn soup, and we’re still going to sale the noodles, gradient drink, and painting the faces, hope we can earn more money. This year Angela and I will do the cash register work, Summer, our teacher is going to help us send the food to other teachers. And today(11/10) we cook once while we are during the house economics class, the teacher gave us a better recipe, the cost of production will be lowered.

Now let me tell you how we’re going on Saturday. Everything sold out except the drinks, I think it’s because every class sold drinks but the weather wasn’t that hot anymore. On that day, Doris’s mom brought “handmade banana cake” for us to earn money, and it worked, the banana cake is $20, the drink is $35, if you get both you can save $5 dollars, our PE teacher bought 4 sets for his graduated students. What makes me felt pity is I didn’t eat any, couldn’t taste how delicious they are. 😩

The kids in Arizona who dressed as cactus are so cute, it’s like you would only see people dressed as banana in Taiwan.

The trick-or-treat usually starts at 6:30, and ends at 8:30, about 200 “trick-or-treaters” came to your house. Hugo’s costume of teletubbies looks like “a frog pretend to be teletubbies” 😂 Did you notice that Candy lost the most important part of teletubbies, the antenna.

Letter 8: Halloween

Sorry Tim, these two weeks I'm really busy, most of the days I was at the basketball court because of the competition, now the game is over, I finally have time to write the letter.

I'm always interested in horror things, either novels or movies is my love. The more scary it is, the more I love it. Recently, I've been watching a television series called "Pretty Little Liars". It's talking about one of five girls who had been killed, after this, someone who named A started to threatened them. A might be the murderer, so they need to find out who A is. On Halloween, we held an party in class, everyone dressed up, but that day was still playing the basketball game, so Selena and I did not join the party. If I could dress up, I would probably be A, he or she is always wearing a black hoodie, with black gloves and black boots. He or she is everywhere, knows everything about you, but you can never find out who A is.

Letter 7: Good news and Bad news come together

Hey Tim, this is Melody!

Nini, Selena , Red are still on the team, and I'm the manager. At first I thought being a manager would be much easier than being a player, but now I know I'm definitely wrong! I'm the most tired person, before the game I need to collect the money then order the lunch. When the game starts, I need to do some records for the coach. These seem easy, but when you're really doing this, you'll find out how difficult it would be.

On Friday(10/27) a game made me cry, this is the first time I cried because a basketball game. I am not a perceptual person, but this game really makes me very touched. The game that day was Zhongshan Girls High School (ZSGH) versus  Nei Hu Senior High School (NHSU), at last ZSGH lost 2 points, it was same as our first game, the match turned at the fourth period, can't believe this would happen.😢😢 But this is not the reason I cried, when they were still playing, we cheer up for both of them, after the game ended, ZSGH said thank you to all of us. Couldn't tell how impress I felt. Normally, you won't appreciate the courage from other teams, even if you do, you won't say it out loud; and only if you lose the game you'll cry, unexpectedly I cried for others. The another reason is, it reminds me we almost win on the first game, what a pity!

As we expected, we reached our goal, won four out of fives game, and get the fifth place. But after this, something shocked me! Our coach won't be our coach anymore, he told us this after winning the game, it's "the-430-day" he teach us. Since he has started to teach us, his family never support him, he has two children who is in kindergarten, need him more then us. The reason he told us at this timing is because if we know this when our morale is high, we can bear it. If this decision makes him feel easier, then I will support him.

Letter 6: We played our first game like the final

Dear Tim:
There’s two important games for high school students, one is the one we are playing now, it’s held by Taipei government, the other one will begin in December, it’s a national race. Today(10/24) we have a important game, if we win, we could make into the top four, every player practice hard for this , they come to school at 7 everyday to do the morning practice, at noon and after school they still have to practice, everyone has made a lot of progress, but we lost 2 points. When the bell rang, the captain cried, at first I didn’t want to cry, though I am pretty sad, but when I heard she cry, I feel like my heart is broken, they really did a lot of effort, the results just weren't as good as we imagined. Then, we have 4 games to play, our goal is to win four out of five games. Because of the rules of the games, even if we win the following four games, we would at most get the fifth place. But at least we can still say that we got this result only because of the rules; we still have what it takes to be better.

Letter 5: Mid-Autumn Festival

Dear Tim, the midterm exam is over, I finally have time to write the letter.

There's lots of legend about Moon Festival. Chang’e was Yi’s wife. One day, when Yi was out hunting, a wicked servant attempted to steal the magic elixir, Chang’e drank the magic potion, and escaped from the evil servant by going to the moon. When Yi returned, he was heartbroken. He set out Chang’e’s favorite fruits and cakes as an offering to her. Chang’e continues to live forever as the “Moon Goddess”.

Let me tell you the story about "Jade Rabbit" and "Wu Kang, the man chopping the cinnamon tree". Wu Kang was the god who makes the pill which can live forever. Once he took the medicine to the human’s world, this made the master angry, and decide to punished him by sent him to the moon and chop the tree every day. Though Wu Kang chopped day and night, the magical tree restored itself with each blow, and thus he is up there chopping still. The master had to find someone to replace Wu Kang to make the pill, but human is too evil, this time he need an animal. The master designates 3 celestial to the human’s world, they transform themselves into 3 poor old men and solicit food from a fox, a monkey and a rabbit. The fox and the monkey had something to give them but the rabbit did not. Afterward the rabbit sacrificed itself by jumping into the fire and burned itself to serve the 3 old men with its meat. The 3 celestial were so touch by the rabbit that they sent the rabbit to the moon palace. The master named the rabbit “Jade Rabbit” because it’s really kind and the fur of it is as white as the jade.

Letter 4: TAS “Twelfth Night”

Dear Tim, I’m sorry that I write this letter late, because the midterm exam is coming, I’m busying prepare the test.

Most of the academic departments and classroom buildings for the University are on the south side of the river, in the ancient days, the only things on the north side of the river were the men’s dormitories. This year the children’s hospital was built and has been open during the football season. If I am one of the sick little kid in the hospital I will feel better when the players wave to me at the end of the 1 st quarter. At that moment, I’ll feel like I am healthy and out of the hospital.

If Chloe is my classmate, I will probably hate her 😂, she’s too lazy and too proud.  She’s really a queen in your house, everyone serves her, she can do whatever she wants. Chloe might be putting on a little weight because she eats out everybody else’s dish, this is what I do in school too, Hugo’s lunch is my lunch. 😁

This semester I study much more harder than before, I stop being late for school, and keep awake in class, but the more I want to be better, the more things I have to do, then the less time I can use. I find it difficult to balance my time, after finishing my school work, I have no time to relax, needless to say spend time on what you like.

On Thursday we went to Taipei American School to watch “Twelfth Night” ,the show they played. What makes me feel excited is last year my favorite actor has played this year! This year he played the role of Andrew, he elaborated his role so well, and he’s pretty cute, that why I’m a big fan of him. But this is his last year to play in TAS, he is going to graduate and study in US, but I believe the show without him will still be awesome. When we took a picture with him, he said he remember us! Awww, it’s so sweet.💕 The background of the play is set at 1980, not only their superb acting, their scene layout and clothing design are on point.

Letter 3:

Dear Tim, now I'm the manager of the basketball team, I help them deal with administrative issues. They didn't stop practicing during summer vacation, next month there's a important competition for them, I believe all of them will do a great job! The more I write, the more I progress, I'll keep writing and try my best.

On September 11th 2001, terrorists hijacked four passenger planes at Boston’s Logan Airport, casualties were heavy. Different colors of ribbon represent different meanings, yellow for fighters, blue for policemen, teddy bears for children. There's also one day in September is of great significance to the people of Taiwan, not a holiday but a memorial day, too. On September 21st 1999, Taiwan has a earthquake, which was a 7.3 Ms  earthquake, 2415 people were killed, 11305 injured. This was Taiwan 's biggest loss of casualties since World War II, Taiwan was badly damaged. After this event, every year on September 21, schools in Taiwan will have a disaster prevention drill.

Letter 2: Selena's birthday party

Dear Tim, this is Melody!

Summer is longer and longer now, starts in early May, and it ends late. Typhoon could be in any season, but most of the time it's only in summer, I remembered last year when winter was going to begin, there's still a typhoon! I feel like Spring and Fall only stay about two weeks, after this, the weather change a lot.

" The sight of all the peaceful wild creatures in the neighborhood is one of the things that make Iowa, well, Iowa. " This would never happened in Taipei, at least I had never seen creatures in the neighborhood. If I have a big yard as your brother has, I would like to keep a deer as a pet, too, and I'll grow some vegetables for myself. The pace in IOWA seems very slow, people have lots of time to do what they like, watering the flower in the morning, walking the dog in city parks after work. Leisurely and elegant.

Letter 1: My Summer Vacation

Ça fait longtemps Tim!

At the beginning of my summer vacation, I went to a camp which was held by our school, it's for the leaders of school club. Most of the people I hadn't met before, but we had to stay with each other and sleep together at night. At first, I thought everyone would be shy, the situation would make me feel embarrassed, but I was totally WRONG. People are out-going, we worked together to pass challenges. The activity which made me the most impressive is to " jump off the tower ". I always want to do challenging things, this time is a good chance for me. The tower is three-floor-high, the part almost made me scream is the most when I jumped down, you would feel like your body and your heart was separated, the body had already fell off but your heart was still up there. At that night, my roommate and I planned to wake up at three to watch the stars. I swear, this is the first time I saw the sky was pink and covered with stars, it's amazing! 

After being back from the camp, I set a goal, I had to exercise regular, and I reach it! I went to the gym three times a week, two days jogging and the other day riding flywheel with my mom, we take a course. She had never done any exercise since she born me, she take a big stride forward. The advantages I got is 3 kilograms left, I'm really proud of this, my skin become better, and I am more spiritual. If you're in a bad mood, go jogging is a good choice.

Letter 29

Dear Tim:

Still remember when I first visit the arboretum in Taipei, my grandparents took me to see squirrels, I think they are cute because they have fluffy tails. But when they move quickly, I would be frightened. Most of the memories in that day was perfect but there's also a bad memory, lots of mosquitoes bit me!

I'm not interested in Turkish, but I'm interested in Turkish food. I like the food which tastes sour or spicy, Thai food is a good one, and I think "Limonata" would be my favorite, too.

My summer plan is to exercise and review the lessons this semester. My son coliosis needs to be treated, maybe I will go to yoga lessons. We're planning a trip in summer vacation, last winter vacation we went to Taichung, this time we want to go to Kaohsiung.

Letter 28

Dear Tim:
I had never known there's this kind of club in Taiwan, thanks for your information. Though this may be a "matchmaking" club for some of the students, but due to the activities, I will still join the club. This is completely different from the school clubs, "Changhua Club" has all aspects of activity, it's quite interesting.

Last week, it was Dragon Boat Festival, family get together, and we used to eat zongzi. BUT this year, I had to stay at school to prepare the annual presentation with all the EHP students and teachers. All of us done a great job, especially the seniors, they planed the whole performance, next year, it's our turn. During these few days, I have learned not only how to prepare a presentation, but also improve our relationship, really feels that EHP is a family.

Letter 27

Hi Tim, there're some good news this week. 💗

I think Memorial Day is similar to 2/28 incident. Both of them commemorate the people who died for the country. The holiday is to honor the victims, but I find out that people now only want to have a vocation, they won't think anything about the history, the holiday become pointless.

I'm happy that class 105 also sold fried noodles, this is easy to earn money, it's always right. School fair in our school is in November, for me it's better than be in May, because summer in Taiwan is tooooo hot, no one would like to be in the sun, if it's in fall or winter, people need more energy to make them warm, so they'll buy lots of food, then we made it!

The basketball tournament I said few weeks ago was on this Tuesday(5/23), guess what, we won the second place! This is the first time I glory for the school. When I was in basketball team, I don't have lot of chances to play, I'm very honored that I can represent the school to join the competition this time. It will always be my best memory.

5/20 is a day for couples in Taiwan, because it sounds like "I love you" in Chinese. And 5/21 is my parents' wedding anniversary, 17 years ago they married. My brother and I always ask "Why don't you get married at 5/20?" The answer is, this day is for couples just started these few years, this is the businessman's plot. We celebrate their wedding anniversary every year, alike to celebrate our birthday, we go to fancy restaurant. I always feel love when people celebrate important days, I feel someone cares about me, unlike some of my friends, they won't celebrate any dates with their family.

My friend is still in ICU, but I believe he'll get better.

Letter 26

Hi Tim, this is Melody.

On my birthday, I will have a big meal with my family, and I can choose where to eat. I will also hang out with my friends, we'll go shopping, or go to a karaoke. Compared to the gift received, I prefer to receive a handwritten card. I would like to have a outdoor birthday party, I think no one have done this for me. I had heard that one of my teacher had celebrate her friend's birthday in a cool way, first the longevity would receive a list, and have to do what the list says, like "open the third locker", what inside the locker would be a small gift, and another task, at last, the longevity would get the birthday present, I think this is the most interesting and challenging way to celebrate birthday.

One of my best friend had a car accident tonight, I'm so worried and grieved, hope he would be fine, and I'll finish the letter tomorrow.

Letter 25

Sorry Tim, this is Melody, because of busying prepare the midterm exam, and I had a headache these days, this letter is REALLY late.

For me, there's something weird about the "Cinco de Mayo" , why it do not celebrate in the whole country of Mexico, but it's celebrated in USA? I think there's no holiday we dance in Taiwan, Cinco de Mayo is like a parade, I would like to have a try with the holiday. The farmers from the surrounding are pretty powerful, especially they didn't have advanced weapons.

The Spring Event in Kangshan HS is similar to our chorus contest, both of us sing and dressed up in the uniform, but in Macau what they do is “poetry recital” .

Next Tuesday, Nini, Red, Selena, and I would have to represent the school to have a basketball tournament, from the previous letter you could know the girls in our class are the best players, hope we can glory for the school.

Letter 24: Won the Chorus Contest !

Dear Tim:
We won the Chorus Contest!!! 👍 It's incredible! What's more? Aubrey won "the best conductor" and Buzz won "the best music accompaniment". It's been a long time for a class to get three awards at once. Because we only have 21 students in our class, so Summer join us, she has been in a choir, no doubt, she's good at singing. We started practicing very early, we spent every lunch time to practice, the first place is absolutely ours. I'm really proud of us.

If a magazine wanted to visit my house, I'll think it's a fraud group and want to steal my money. 😂 It's cool to live in a one-hundred-year-old house, if I live in it, I'll regard myself as a princess. For me, an old house is the same level as a castle, elegant and beautiful. 💗

Letter 23: We got the fourth place!

Hello Tim:
It's a little late to write this letter, because a few days ago we're having the basketball tournament. When I got home, after taking a shower, I fall asleep. 😂

The only place I've traveled aboard is Hong-Kong. I have never been to Japan, take it for granted, I have never seen the snow. From your introduction, Akita is so beautiful! I was attracted by its environment. In Taipei, the pace of life is always fast, so I would like to be in a place full of mountains, forests, and rivers with waterfalls.

When I was in kindergarten, the teachers would put the eggs in the park nearby, the one who can find out the most would get a gift, BUT I NEVER GET THE GIFT. 😑 In elementary school, the teacher would prepare fake eggs for us to paint, I remembered the last one I drew was an angry bird! But it's been a bit long, I can't find it out, and I don't have the picture of it, either. Now we're not celebrating Easter, I almost forgot about this holiday, miss the days at that time~ 💋

Hi Tim, this is Melody again!

I'm happy that I have progressed in my exam last month, after I was in the basketball team, my grades had been regressed, but now I'm not one of them, and my grades gradually meet my standards.

Letter 21: St. Patrick's Day / The Cup Song / HBD

Hi Tim! This is Melody.
You know what, our team got 20 points in the first round!!! 20 points!!! I'm so proud of this, I chose most of the teams, and I had never watched NCAA before. (but I have listened few famous teams ✌)

The first time I know St. Patrick's Day is because I watched a article talking about St. Patrick's Day in a English magazine, it told the origin of this festival. The second time is when I was checking my Instagram on St. Patrick's Day, I saw people post the photo and write down "Time to get some greens!" I'm really surprised that there're people in Taiwan celebrate St. Patrick's Day. (Can't watch the Irish dance scene from the movie “Titanic”, it says the video can't be played in this area.)

Last Summer Vocation, I did a school performance with my friends in Zhong Zheng, it was started with the Cup Song (👈click here). I'm the one in the middle, wearing a black T-shirt. Miss the good old days. 💗

Letter 20: WBC / NCAA

Dear Tim:
I think one of the reason we lost the game is because we have no player who plays in MLB this year. 😔
Still remember the first baseball game I watched, it's Brother Elephants vs. Macoto Cobras, my grandpa is a fan of Brother Elephants, at that time they were really popular, so we cannot buy their tickets, that day they lost. I was only 5-year-old, after the game I think my grandpa would be sad because his team lost, I told my dad to buy a doll of the elephant, and I can play with my grandpa, maybe he won't be that sad. LOL 😂

Letter 19: Cook by myself / WBC

Dear Tim:
This month, I decided to make my lunch myself. It's very difficult for me, because both of my parents can't do well on cooking, I have to learn by myself. I was interested in making dessert before, I have made cookies and cheesecake, after visited Alice's web, it makes me want to make all of them, it looks tasty. 😋 Every dessert have its recipe on it, it's very convenient.
I was shocked that Taiwan didn't win any game of WBC, and I really don't know Israel is good at playing baseball. We can't go to Tokyo and play round 2. 😭 I believe we'll win in 2021!
And thank you for introduced the 228 incident for us, we had understood it clearly.

Letter 18:

Once I watched a volley ball competition in Neihu, and I lost my easy card, I found it everywhere but still didn't find it, I felt really upset. I love the sticker on the card, but I can't remember where I buy it, I almost cried out. 😢
Wow! I can imagine how Bernie killed the rat. When I was little, there're also rats in the roof of my grandparents' house, you could see them walking through the roof. The most horrible is that the rat jumped on the dining table from the roof, I let out a scream, and hid behind my auntie. At last, my grandpa caught the rat himself, this gave me a deep impression.
The last WBC was in 2013, I was still an elementary school student (in fact, sixth grade already) , my teacher was a baseball fan, too. She told us to watched the game, and wrote our feelings, but sorry Tim, actually I'm not a baseball fan. I remembered my teacher said "I think you're not interested in baseball😥"  (I'll try to find that notebook😂) Tell you I good news, when the regular season for baseball starts, I will watch it! Because my grandpa loves baseball, and I want to spend more time on him. Another reason is we have to do a report for sports, this time I'll write baseball.⚾

This vocation everyone in our class wrote a diary, you can what you want, like "food paradise" or " travel magazine" ....... , and what I do is to write about things happened everyday.
I like simplicity style, so I chose the one there's nothing on the cover. (bought in MUJI)

Letter 16: My Winter Vacation 😁

Hello Tim! After the vacation, we’re back! I think you understand lots of things about Chinese New Year. As usual, we clean the house before celebrating, I found out some photos from junior high, I also cleaned the clothes and shoes which I don’t wear now, I’m going to donate them.

On Chinese New Year eve, I went back to my grandparents’ (father’s father) home, some people say if woman who has married went back home on this day, she’ll be unlucky this year. It is a day that family get together. We had dinner at the restaurant, but I think my grandfather cooks better. After the dinner, we played firecrackers, and麻將. 麻將 is like poker cards in western cultures.

On the vacation, I had a trip to Taichung with Candy, Melvyn, and William. This is the first time I sleep out with friends, so I’m very excited. We bought the tickets, booked the hotel, plan where to go, all by ourselves, this is a new experience for me, and I learn something from this (ex. I know what should I prepare if I’m not 18 but I want to sleep in a hotel). I’ll go out with them in summer vacation, too. I've started looking forward!
